How the digital SAT works
4 minute read
Two sections, four modules
The SAT has a Reading and Writing section and a Math section. Each section is split into two modules, and there is a 10-minute break between the sections.
Reading and Writing
54 questions64 minutes, two modules of 32
Math
44 questions70 minutes, two modules of 35
The second module adapts
The first module of each section has a mix of easy, medium and hard questions. How you do on it decides whether your second module is easier or harder.
How it’s scored
Each section is scored from 200 to 800, so your total is between 400 and 1600.
Calculator
You can use a calculator on every Math question. A graphing calculator is built into Bluebook, the app you take the test in, and you can also bring an approved calculator.
Test day
You take the SAT at a test center on a laptop or tablet in Bluebook. If you need a device, you can borrow one from College Board if you ask at least 30 days before test day.
